Dave Specter (Delmark)
Chicago native Dave Specter honed his guitar playing throughout the 1980s with some of the best in the blues: Son Seals, Johnny Littlejohn, The Legendary Blues Band, Hubert Sumlin, Sam Lay, and Steve Freund, and went on to become bandleader of his own unit, the Bluebirds, and composer of sophisticated instrumentals that often meld blues and jazz styles. He has distinguished himself as a blues guitarist by his excellent taste coupled with an intuitive grasp of appropriate chord voiceings for rhythm and clean and lean licks for frosty leads.
He is able to share a stage with nearly anyone in the worlds of blues, jazz, and beyond, and in fact often gets that chance in his side gig as owner of Evanston’s SPACE, a superior music room with an eclectic booking policy. To date, he has recorded nine of his own recordings for Delmark, several of them partnered with well-known vocalists, and has appeared on and produced more than a dozen others.
His most recent release is Message in Blue, recorded with Otis Clay singing on three tracks, shortly before he passed.
