Selwyn Birchwood, born in Orlando, Florida in 1985, is one of those rare young men who found that the music of his genera- tion didn’t speak to him the way the blues did. He picked up a guitar and quickly immersed himself in the blues, getting his first break touring the U.S. and Canada at nineteen years of age with lap steel Texas bluesman Sonny Rhodes.

A big booster of his home state of Florida, Birchwood named his 2011 CD debut FL Boy. “I wasn’t pretending to be from the Delta,” Selwyn has said, “I’m from Florida.” The Selwyn Birchwood Band won top honors at the 2013 International Blues Challenge, and Selwyn additionally was awarded the Albert King Award for Best Guitarist.

His drummer, Curtis Nutall, has served with Joe Louis Walker and The Blind Boys of Alabama, and bassist Huff Wright and saxophonist Regi Oliver have backed Lucky Peterson. The band’s current release, their fourth, is titled Pick Your Poison, their second release on Alligator Records.
